How do you handle alcohol and diabetes? Today we’re talking about alcohol and type 1 diabetes—and Jessie’s got all the questions!

We also talk about my history with alcohol, how alcohol affect my blood sugars, and why diabetics have to be careful when imbibing. Alcohol and diabetes can mix, but only if you’re aware of 1) how you react to it and 2) how much you’re drinking.

Wins & Fails

Jessie’s Win: Jessie finally re-did her room! Not technically diabetes-related. She did experience low blood sugars while re-doing it, though.

Colleen’s Fail: I waited a long time to re-order the GrifGrips that work the best for me. Some of them fall off after just a couple of days.

Tip of the Week

When you’re low, make sure you give the carb corrections time to kick in before eating more low snacks.

Diabetes Spotlight

PBS released a documentary called Blood Sugar Rising.

Here is the description of the documentary:

Diabetes and pre-diabetes affect over 100 million people in the US, costing more than $325 billion each year. It’s now predicted that one in three children born since 2000 will develop the disease.

Blood Sugar Rising puts human faces to these statistics, exploring the history and science of the illness through portraits and voices of Americans whose stories shape the documentary. Together, they present a dramatic depiction of this hidden national crisis. The two-hour special also reveals new hopes: from the rise of safer and easier medical treatments to new discoveries about lifestyle and environmental factors, Blood Sugar Rising reports on those taking action to improve diabetes management and prevention.

Now It's Your Turn...

How does alcohol affect your blood sugars? Do you stay away from all alcohol, or indulge in it—legally, of course!
