In this episode we cover the main CGM manufacturers: overview, pros, cons, features, benefits, and what’s coming next for each. This is a follow-up and extension of our episode on the different pump manufacturers.
There are three big names in sensors or CGM manufacturers, and one relatively new kid on the block:
- Medtronic Guardian
- Dexcom G6
- Abbot Freestyle Libre
- and the newcomer, Senseonics Eversense.
Because Jessie and I don’t have firsthand experience with the Libre or the Eversense, we reached out again to our Facebook communities and got a lot of good input on those two sensors.

Wins & Fails
Jessie’s Win: Her sensor fell off at the perfect time. Sometimes the timing just works.
Colleen’s Fail: I had a random unexplained high blood sugar that ended up looking like a hill on my CGM. It didn’t coincide with any food, but my set was on its last day, so I changed it in the middle of the high. It still took some extra bolusing to bring it all the way down.
Tip of the Week
If you use a pump clip, keep your pump unclipped from your body while you’re sleeping. If you have it clipped to one side and you roll onto that side while you’re sleeping, it can get uncomfortable fast.
When I wore the Medtronic pump, it was free of any clips while I was sleeping for this exact reason.
Diabetes Spotlight
The spotlight this week is on the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation Canada, or DRIFC, which is working on a cure.
Dr. James Shapiro maintains an active research and development lab at the Alberta Diabetes Institute(ADI). His Clinical Islet Transplant Program has done over 600 transplants, more than any other islet program around the world. He and his team have many clinical trials including human trials. He collaborates with researchers around the world including with the San Diego based regenerative medicine company, Viacyte for stem cell transplants.
