Pregnancy and T1D can be a daunting combination to those women concerned about what risks accompany it. Listen in to hear Kristen Haymon's experience with pregnancy after loss, and with twins, no less! For those of you with questions, Kristen has some answers.

Kristen is a lifelong T1D (we're diagnosis age twins), so she has a lot of experience and perspective to share. Her experience with pregnancy and her T1D can make the possibility less scary for you, if you want kids.

Meet Kristen Haymon

Kristen Haymon has had T1D for over 30 years. She's a nurse consultant whose diagnosis at age 2 played a powerful role in her decision to go into the medical field.

Kristen educates clients on diabetes and clinical products that support insured members with diabetes. She is also certified in Advanced Diabetes Management.

She spent most of her life on injections and didn't switch to a pump until she decided to pursue pregnancy. Switching to the Tandem t:Slim X2 pump helped her successfully carry a twin pregnancy (during COVID!) after two miscarriages.

Wins & Fails

Colleen's Win: The other day I noticed my blood sugar starting to go down, so instead of using Smarties to bring it up, I turned off my insulin and left it off until my number started going up on its own.

Colleen's Fail: And that’s the fail, that Control IQ wasn’t catching it when I wanted to, or fast enough.

Hack or Tip of the Week

If you are considering having kids and you’re a type 1 diabetic woman, please make sure you find an OBGYN who knows about type 1 diabetes and whose patients have type 1 diabetes. You will want someone who is familiar with your situation. Pregnancy and T1D can be a high-risk combination if you don't have a good support system and care team.
