Through them all, you'll need your low snacks and supplies available, but there's so much more that goes into staying safe as a type 1 diabetic while handling a move.

Wins & Fails

Colleen's Win: My mom visited us in Montana and we went on a couple of hikes/long walks. My blood sugars were awesome for both!

Jessie's Fail: Jessie had to say goodbye to her pediatric endocrinologist, who she's been with since she was diagnosed ten years ago.

Hack or Tip of the Week

A key piece of managing a move with T1D is to not pack your diabetes supplies in the moving truck! Keep them with you in your personal vehicle to make sure nothing happens to them

Wondering what it's like managing a move with T1D? I share my lessons learned from moving to Montana from Washington.

Diabetes Spotlight

The spotlight this week is on the College Diabetes Network’s “Off to College with Diabetes” guide, available on their website. There’s a section in there for a moving timeline, which will help even if you’re out of college and moving as an adult. Some of their move-in tips include:

  • Have low snacks ready
  • Check your fridge to make sure it’s plugged in—this is more for a mini fridge, but also important to make sure your full-sized fridge in an apartment or home is actually cold.
  • Go food shopping
  • Make sure supplies are accessible
  • Have a glucagon kit readily available
  • Find the closest pharmacy (if you’re not doing mail-order and need something right away)

Question for You!

Have you ever done a move with T1D? Is there something you’re really proud of about moving with diabetes?
